Nutritional qualities and Benefits

Gotu kola is a rich source of vitamin B1 (thiamin), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Our bodies do not make Vitamin B1 (and other B vitamins) so it is important to take in food that will provide us with an adequate and regular supply. Vitamin B1, the "morale" vitamin helps us maintain a healthy nervous system and a positive mental attitude, and works to convert food or sugar into energy that we need to be able to function. Fatigue, headaches, visual problems and mental confusion are some of the results of a Vitamin B1 deficiency.

Vitamin B2, like Vitamin B1, is necessary for body growth, the conversion of food into energy and the production of red blood cells that carries oxygen to all parts of our bodies. It boosts up our immune system and helps in the production of antibodies and facilitates the healing of wounds and other injuries. It has beneficial effects in the treatment of problems in the nervous system (such as but not limited to anxiety, stress, fatigue, and Alzheimer's disease).

Vitamin B3 lowers the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases the level of good cholesterol (HDL) in our blood. There are also some indications from preliminary studies that it may alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis and lower your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin B6 is said to be the "busiest" vitamin. It is essential in the production of hemoglobin in our red blood cells and increases the amount of oxygen in our hemoglobin. Hemoglobin performs the vital task of carrying oxygen to all our tissues. Vitamin B6 also helps us in maintaining a healthy immune system that can fight off infection through the production of antibodies. Another of its functions-and our benefits-is to keep your blood sugar levels within a normal range.

The principal bio-active chemical constituent of gotu kola is saponin. Several studies using laboratory animals have shown that gotu kola extracts helped in relaxing the nervous system and improving its capacity to learn and retain memories.
